Kavango and Caprivi

Here the contrast to a mainly arid Namibia is characterised by the lush flora. This wetland is a paradise for ornithologists. Time and again traditional villages pass by and buffalos and elephants migrate across the park borders. In the river hippos grunt away. The people living in the Caprivi cultivate their fields, are livestock farmers, fishermen and hunters.

Most of the people of the Kavango Region live along the Okavango River, border to Angola. Recommendable first stop over travelling from Etosha and Grootfontein is Rundu. In the surrounding area a couple of nice lodges can be found - Hakusembe, Kaisosi, Nkwazi, Sarasungu, Kavango River Lodge.

About 200 km lies the dusty village of Divundu. Here two game reserves are found: the Mahango National Park and the Bwabwata Park. The well-known Popa Rapids and several accommodation facilities are found in a radius of 10 km, like the Divava Okavango Lodge, Nunda River Lodge, Mahango Lodge or Ndhovu Lodge.

On the eastern side of the Bwabwata Park the MUDUMU and MAMILI National Park are found. The banks of the Kwando River host several lodges for example Lianshulu Lodge, Namushasha, Susuwe and Camp Kwando. High papyrus plants frame the banks of the Kwando River, which later - on the Botswana side – is first called Linyanti and then Chobe before flowing into the mighty Zambezi River. At different museum villages visitors can learn about the history and the traditional way of life of the people in the Caprivi.

At the eastern end of the 480 km long Caprivi Strip lies KatimaMulilo, where one can stay over at the Zambezi Lodge or Caprivi River Lodge, before crossing the border to Botswana at Ngoma.
